Just in time for Back to School, and in the midst of evidence that people are increasingly turning to the internet instead of driving to stores, Amazon.com Inc. has created a new office supplies section to its website. The move puts it head to head with the big office supplies chains that do more and more of their business via the web.
According to Internet Retailer, the web accounts for 29 percent of all sales for Staples, 32 percent of sales for Office Depot and 35 percent of sales for OfficeMax.
The new Amazon section is offering more than 500,000 items for classroom, home and office use. It kicked the section off with an introductory offer of a 10 percent discount on selected items.
"We are thrilled to offer our customers an easy and convenient way to find and discover everything they need to outfit their office or classroom," said Chris Rupp, director of merchandising for computers and office supplies. "With our enormous breadth of selection, we have paper, pencils, sticky notes, pushpins and much more, all available for purchase with the click of a mouse, 24 hours a day, seven days a week."
Each product page in the office supplies section includes product specifications and descriptions, images, and customer reviews.
