Dollar General Sells Online

Oct 1, 2011

In an attempt to be more competitive, discount retailer Dollar General has redesigned its website, www.dollargeneral.com, as a functional online store. The company says the product categories available online will include health and beauty products, cleaning supplies, baby items, and food and snacks. There will also be online exclusives, and merchandise will be available by the case, as well as by the unit. Customers will be able to pay using credit cards, debit cards, or PayPal.

GSI Commerce, a technology services company and subsidiary of eBay, has signed a contract with Dollar General to handle the ecommerce technology, payments, customer care and marketing services required for the site. Dollar General has 9,600 stores in 35 states, which is the most retail locations for any one company in America. However, this new initiative will allow the already giant retailer to reach the states and markets in which it currently has little or no presence. "Dollar General is excited to meet the growing demand for online convenience and value," says Rick Dreiling, the company's chair and CEO. "We have streamlined the online shopping experience, giving customers what they need as well as what they want, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year."
