Hi-Dow began in 2002 as the U.S. distribution point for the Massage Mouse, the U.S. version of a successful product manufactured and distributed in China. The factory, one of the few that has Chinese FDA approval for the manufacture of medical equipment and massage products, also produces medical equipment for hospitals and doctors in China. They also received approval from the U.S. FDA for their massage products, which other U.S. competitors do not have.

The Chinese version of the Massage Mouse comes with pads that are applied to acupuncture pressure points which correspond to where body pain is isolated. Eric Chen, President of Hi-Dow and part owner of the factory, thought the complex treatment points might make the product less attractive to U.S. consumers, so he decided to simplify it.

"There's no need to learn the acupuncture pressure points. When they have any kind of problem with muscle pressure or pain or tension, they just apply a pad to it," Chen said.

Hi-Dow has a team of forty acupuncturists, massage therapists, chiropractors, and electronics designers on staff at the China factory location, who design the products. "The factory had the capability to make all kinds of electronic devices," said Chen, "but since it had Chinese FDA, we specialize in medical devices."

Easy Pain Relief
Hi-Dow now also has a professional version of the Massage Mouse available, called the Massage XP. This model comes with the treatment point charts and can help reduce high blood pressure. It also comes with a foot massage function.

"There are so many pressure points on your foot," said Chen. "It's good for the heart, and good for blood pressure, and gives you a really good massage. When you travel to China, it's very popular to find a foot massage almost anywhere."

Their customers vary widely. Bob James, Hi-Dow's Director of Marketing, includes gift and specialty stores, mall kiosks, salons, acupuncturists, chiropractors, and health stores in the mix. He says products have been selling off the shelves since they were first introduced to the U.S.

He noted that, "Big companies with so many workers, with everybody sitting in front of the computer, can use the Massage Mouse. Ida Cole, Director of Customer Service, spends most of her day speaking with customers. "We have a lot of repeat customers. And they buy multiple products, because our products are so practical. We try to develop items that have a need."

The LED Emergency Torch is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Connected to a wall outlet, it charges. If there's a power outage it turns on automatically. Unplug it and you have a flashlight. The prongs fold in for easy and safe portability, and it holds a charge for hours. It is a natural take along for camping or travel. "And when you're done, they have Velcro backings, so you can take them off, throw them in the washer, the dryer, and then use them again," said Cole. "In fact, when you're not walking around the house sweeping your floor, you can take them off, put them on your hands, and dust your tables. Our items are very practical, and they're versatile." The Ionic Night Lamp is another of their most recent items to come to America, and it also serves two purposes at once. It purifies the air, and provides a luminous glow for any room of the house. "We are the direct manufacturer. All products are from our own factory," Chen said. "We don't have any middlemen, so our price will be the best and the quality will be the best." Chen adds that Hi-Dow can also custom design for their customers if it is a large quantity order. "If a company needs a direct China manufacturer, we can do that."
