The target market for the new alliance is AARP's 39 million members and baby boomers, people born between 1946 and 1964. According to AARP, the groups spend more than $225 billion annually on healthcare. Baby boomers also account for about 61% of all over the counter medication sales.
The new web site, www.AARP.walgreens.com, will carry more than 20,000 discounted health, beauty and wellness products. As an incentive to order online, AARP and Walgreens are offering free shipping on orders over $50 and a five percent product discount.
"Our members represent a large percentage of this group and our relationship with Walgreens will provide them with discounts and easier access to a wide variety of health related products," said an AARP spokesman. The new site allows customers to return items to a local Walgreens store. Once they are on the site, which links to Walgreens.com, visitors can refill prescriptions and access an extensive healthcare information library.
